Rex must go to great lengths to protect his secret that he is a girl inside. It’s bad enough that he is too “girly,” and the boys think he’s a “sissy.” He gets bullied regularly and violently. This book covers the coping strategies used to survive bullying and worse. Rex reaches out for help, telling his parents, who ignore him. Even a psychologist tells him never to speak of it again. Then he tries to talk him into accepting that he is a boy on the outside and must stay that way regardless of the girl on the inside.
