Rex struggles to try and fit in as a boy even though he's a girl inside. He becomes an electronics genius, a ham radio operator.
He discovers, to his horror, that he now has a bass voice, and his hopes of becoming a girl are dashed. The deep gender dysphoria leads to drug addiction, suicidal behavior, and blackouts.
This curse becomes a blessing as he finds friends in music, theater, and the gay community.
